Leschenault Biosecurity Group
The Leschenault Biosecurity Group (LBG) is made up of volunteer landholders representing the shires of Capel, Dardanup, northern parts of Donnybrook - Balingup and the City of Bunbury.
The group was formed in 2014 out of community concern for declared pests, which are increasingly becoming a major impediment to the livelihood of producers and landholders.
The LBG takes a positive and proactive approach to facilitating declared pest management and is focused on increasing community awareness on declared pests and their management; and on achieving on-ground outcomes to compliment the great work the majority of individual landholders are already doing.
As a representation of community, the group relies on membership to determine it’s priorities and goals in pest management. The higher the community involvement, the better the group can represent the priorities of the community. Sign up today using the link below.
On Tuesday 9th July 2019 the Agriculture and Food Minister Alannah MacTiernan approved Declared Pest Rates for the Leschenault Biosecurity Group for 2019-20, which will be matched dollar for dollar by State Government funding.
The State Government has allocated $2.68 million to match the rates to be raised, which will be made available to 13 recognised biosecurity groups across WA, including the LBG. This is the first year the LBG has raised a rate, which will bring us up to speed with other biosecurity groups operating in our region, including Blackwood Biosecurity Inc and Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group.
One of the major benefits of the Declared Pest Rate is that the money collected in our area will be spent in our area. This year will see over $250,000 spent on local declared pest issues in the LBG operational area as determined by the community.
An annual flat rate will be applied to properties that fall within the LBG operational area described as 'freehold land on the rural valuation roll, and on urban farming on the non-rural valuation roll' as follows:
Properties 1 – 10 hectares = $45
Properties over 10 hectares = $60
As a result of ongoing community consultation, the LBG has developed an Operational Plan for 2019-20.
